Spring Loaded Detents
Spring loaded detents are positioning elements with an internal spring mechanism. They are designed to "snap", "lock" or "limit" a part by means of spring pressure and a metal ball or round head structure. Simply put, when a part is moved into a specific position, the ball in the detent is pushed out by the spring to snap into a groove or hole for precise positioning.
Spring ball plunger is one of the common types of spring loaded detents, it usually consists of three parts:
- Ball: interacts with the contact surface to achieve positioning or limiting;
- Spring: provides a constant preload;
- Body: for mounting and securing the internal components.

The principle of the Spring ball plunger is very intuitive: when the ball is pressed down by an external force, the internal spring is compressed; once the external force is released, the spring returns to its original state and ejects the ball, thus achieving the reset and locking function.

Spring loaded detents usually fulfil three main functions in machine design:
- Positioning function: Reliable positioning of the part in a specific position is achieved by spring force and ball contact;
- Retention function: prevents the workpiece from shifting due to vibration or gravity;
- Release function: can be easily disengaged by external forces and has the ability to be quickly unlocked.
In addition, spring loaded detents are compact and easy to install, making them useful in tight spaces.
For different application scenarios, the choice of material for spring loaded detents is crucial.
- Stainless steel: high rust resistance, suitable for humid and chemical environments;
- Carbon steel: low cost, high strength, suitable for general industrial use;
- Plastic housings or composite materials: for light-duty or insulated environments.
